Every single person reading this article is a bargain shopper when it comes to dynasty fantasy football. We all want the best talent we can possible acquire for the absolute minimum. I have said many times on the Under the Helmet podcast that the cheapest way to acquire talent is during your startup drafts. All you have to do is sit there, wait and draft the value on your boards. It is no different, even in the late stages of your startup drafts. So much so, I want to cover five different players you are being drafted well after pick 200 rolls around. Here are some guys you should be focused on acquiring outside the top 200.
1. Richard Rodgers, TE GB (ADP 214)
It is unfathomable to me that the potential TE1 in Green Bay is being drafted this late. People must think he possess zero talent. Sure he may have to compete for targets with a bunch of other talented guys, but I want any piece of the Green Bay puzzle that is going to get significant playing time. Plus, Rodgers showed a lot of plus characteristics in his rookie season. I wouldn’t be even a little bit surprised to see his ADP in the top 100 a year from now.
2. Stevie Johnson, WR SD (ADP 216)
Old Stevie boy may be long in the tooth, but he is in a very nice situation in San Diego. Johnson has been the focal point of defenses for the majority of his career and has never played with a quarterback on Philip Rivers’ level. With Keenan Allen presumably soaking up most of the double teams, Stevie should feast underneath. I could realistically see him pushing for 80 receptions this season. He definitely isn’t that young, sexy sleeper, but he could be that bye week fill in that keeps your dynasty train rolling through the regular season.
3. Aaron Dobson, WR NE (ADP 239)
I’m sorry but Dobson’s ADP to me is absolutely disgusting. Brandon LaFell played surprisingly well in 2014 but the talent differential between the two is quite large by my estimation. The ONLY reason you are getting this big of a discount on Dobson is because of a foot injury, that’s it. It would only take a solid start to the season for him to be back in the good graces of a large majority of his nay-sayers. If this were indeed to happen, expect an enormous jump in Dobson’s ADP. Honestly, a 150 spot bump is not out of the question after a solid month or so. Look how fast people changed their opinion on Brian Quick last season pre-injury.
4. Albert Wilson, WR KC (ADP 247)
I guess I am naïve, but I thought the dynasty community as a whole was higher on Wilson than this. He was basically the only WR in KC last season that looked like he was running on two feet. He was definitely the only WR with a legitimate chance to catch a touchdown. Perhaps the addition of Chris Conley is throwing dynasty owners off of Wilson’s scent, but considering Wilson is more of a slot receiver, Conley will not really cut into his playing time. Am I a huge fan of Wilson myself? No. However, I do think he could be a solid package up player if he were to get off to a semi-hot start. I like his short-term prospects a lot better than his long-term outlook.
5. Nick Toon, WR NO (ADP 252)
An article about players outside of the top 200 wouldn’t be complete unless Toon was included. He has a unique opportunity to gobble up a lot of playing time in 2015 and early reports say the WR3 job is his too lose. Now that Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills are gone, someone has to step up to the plate and soak up those lost targets. So why not Nick Toon? He has just as good of a chance as anyone else at succeeding and at least we have seen him flash a time or two during his NFL career.
