This dynasty trade was made during the rookie draft in early-August with one of my strongest teams. The league is a 14-team non-PPR, start 1-2-2-1-1Flex-K-DST with shallow 22-man rosters and no taxi or injured reserve. I have finished in the top-3 all three years of the league.
The Approach
This trade was made while I was on the clock with the 2.12 pick. At this point in the rookie draft, the best players available were Keith Marshall and Jonathan Williams. Roster size is an issue for me in this league so I initially set out to package Breshad Perriman and the pick for Sammie Coates and a 2017 3rd. When this counter was sent back, it was a snap accept.
The Trade
Gave 2.12, 2018 3rd
Received Sammie Coates
The initial offer accomplished my goal of consolidating roster spots and I was willing to give up value to gain said roster spot. While freeing up the roster spot was the catalyst for sending out the offer, you have to stay flexible during negotiations to gain value.
With the positive buzz coming out of Pittsburgh this offseason and the open depth chart this year in the wake of Martavis Bryant’s suspension, Coates has the opportunity to breakout in 2016.
My Post Trade Roster
Jameis Winston, Kirk Cousins
Le’Veon Bell, Todd Gurley, Ezekiel Elliott, Derrick Henry, Kenneth Dixon
Odell Beckham Jr., Sammy Watkins, Kevin White, Jordan Matthews, Devin Funchess, Will Fuller, Sammie Coates, Breshad Perriman
Travis Kelce, Clive Walford, Austin Seferian-Jenkins
2017 1,1,4,4,5,5
Takeaways
Do not be afraid to shift gears drastically in your trade negotiations in order to get a deal accomplished. While it is important to make trades with a purpose or goal in mind, there are times when gaining value is more important. I still have roster space issues, but I now have more pieces available to play with.
