NFL Draft
I’m writing this Friday May 1st aka. post-Day 1 of the NFL draft, pre-Day 2 & 3. And I’m doing so with the sweet sense of relief that comes from unsuccessfully trying to trade for Tre Mason for most of the week. Much like my desire to pay Isaiah Crowell + for Tre Mason, the trades in this edition of Making the Trade pre-date the NFL draft. I’ve chosen trades I think are still relevant for discussion, but it’s something to keep in mind.
Mega Deal
@ChadParsonsNFL am I doing it right? GAVE Murray Dez Julio D. Walker 2.01 FOR ODB Sammy C. Michael L. Green 1.01, 1.02, 1.06 #UTHtrades

You can click this link some additional discussion on why I like this trade, and you’ll also get some of the common counter arguments to deals like this and the UTH mentality in general. The reason I like the Odell Beckham side of the deal is because you’re getting the best player in the deal and the side with the extra value. Let’s break this into mini-trades for easier analysis.
Trade 1: Give Dez Bryant for Odell Beckham Jr. + Ladarius Green
It’s probably blasphemy to some to call Odell Beckham the best player in a Dez Bryant trade, but the fact is that they’re going 1 & 2 in DLF’s April ADP. Another fact is that Beckham has already achieved something that Dez Bryant never has: a season with more than 20 PPR FP/G. Dez is a great young player but Beckham has already demonstrated ceiling that Bryant has not, and Beckham is five years younger without character concerns or back issues. As much as I like Dez I would deal him for Odell Beckham straight up, and in fact, when my brother Mike and I took over an orphan in the RotoViz Dynasty League, it was our first order of business.
The best part about this deal is you don’t even have to agree with me. Ladarius Green acts as a tie breaker between two very evenly matched assets.
Trade 2: Give Julio Jones for Sammy Watkins + 1.01
Julio is one of the best young assets in fantasy football but this would be too much value for me to pass up. Another way to think about this deal is that you’re essentially trading down from the mid-1st in a start-up for two 2nd round picks. (Cooper is already being drafted in the second and Gurley may climb into that range post-draft). That’s a great deal in a start-up draft, and not an offer you’re likely to see very often… for good reason–the value is on the side of Watkins and the 1.01.
Trade 3: Give DeMarco Murray for 1.02
Murray still has his believers, but both Gurley and Cooper have been going ahead of Murray in ADP since March. With Gordon landing in San Diego, it’s possible that Murray’s value may drop below the 1.03 as well.
Trade 4: Give Delanie Walker for Christine Michael
Giving: Situational talent
Getting: Young Running Back with elite upside.
Bonus: ADP strongly prefers Michael.
Trade 5: Give 2.01 for 1.06
Duh.
Final Verdict
How many of those 5 trades do you make? Personally I make them all. There are dynasty owners who see deals like these as throwing away a championship window. But landing this type of value for anyone, even studs, is how championships are won, not lost.

@DynastyTrades @ChadParsonsNFL #dynastytrades #UTHtrades Gave: forte and 2.10 Got: mason and 1.06 — brian rogers (@BeeROG9) April 27, 2015
@DynastyTrades made this one yesterday #dynastytrades #UTHtrades PRE-DRAFT devy PPR GAVE: Tre Mason Received: Jay Ajayi and Sammie Coates

This is a nice cascading trade, with some impeccable timing! I was feeling good for just being lucky enough not to have traded for Mason. Kudos to Brian for being active at just the right time.
Avoiding Risk
Ellington and John brown for 1.9 and a third. @ChadParsonsNFL @Harahduh2 #UTHtrades
— Brad Davis (@Gecko998) April 29, 2015
I imagine this was partially motivated in part by a fear that Arizona would land a Running Back in Round 1 but I still like this deal even after the first round. Knowing what we knew on Wednesday this deal was a smart move to avoid holding the bag on Ellington–who may still see the Cardinals draft a quality Running Back to compete with (read: replace) him. Knowing what we know now, the 1.09 looks to be a first round Wide Receiver or a Day 2 Running Back in a good situation, both of which are likely to be more valuable than Ellington.
