Welcome to Under The Helmet’s newest weekly feature, Making the Trade, where we break down real dynasty trades submitted on twitter by UTH Nation using #UTHtrades. If you make a dynasty trade, share it with UTH! #UTHtrades
We had some great dynasty trades come through this week but let’s start with two centered around one of my favorite targets, Davante Adams:
@pkerrane #uthtrades Gave Still 2.01 for Adams 2.09, ppr
— Mark Roemer (@mrroemer) March 26, 2015
@pkerrane Gave wr charles Johnson Viks rec WR Devante Adams. trade sent to me as counter… #UTHtrades
— BAMNation ⚓ (@B_International) March 27, 2015
Both of these trades show that Davante Adams’ price is falling significantly now that Randall Cobb has re-signed in Green Bay, and it’s probably to the point where he’s becoming a buy in most leagues. Adams’ path to relevance seems blocked but remember that Jordy Nelson is entering his Age 30 season and should start to decline within the next 1-2 years. Admas’ long-term outlook remains bright. His short-term prospects are also promising. Even as the number three option in GB, Adams has WR2 upside on a week-to-week basis and WR1 upside if either Nelson or Cobb suffers an injury. Post-Cobb signing the Adams owner in your league may be dispirited, so now is a good time to throw out an offer.
Cascading Value
The first post I did for UTH was an example of cascading trades where I packaged up Charles Johnson, made two trades and ended up with Donte Moncrief. I liked that result. I like this one even more:
@pkerrane @ChadParsonsNFL Cool! 2.09 + T. Austin for 2.05, then 2.05 + R.Randle for 1.12, then 1.12 for Latimer + 3.09 & 2016 3rd #UTHTrades
— Robert Shauntte (@Shaunttell) March 27, 2015
So that’s 2.09 + Tavon Austin + Rueben Randle = Cody Latimer + two 3rds. That deal gets insta-rejected by 99% of dynasty owners, but @Shaunttell pulled it off with cascading trades.
Save Me Some Leftovers
I like this trade as an example of why to always ask for a little extra in your deals. Those leftovers can turn into a full meal, or in this case, Jordan Cameron.
@pkerrane J Cameron for 2.09 and 2017 3rd. picks were add ons in other trades. Peterson for Miller and 2.09, Wright for 2nd & 3rd #UTHtrades
— The Dynasty Smith (@thirddowntheory) March 27, 2015
Last off-season I saw Cameron as overvalued and I moved off him in the two league I owned him– getting the 1.05 + 2.03 in one league and DeAndre Hopkins straight up in another. This off-season I think the value has swung the other way with Cameron now going for about a mid 2nd. Cameron was quietly efficient on a bad offense last season, finishing 3rd among qualifying TEs last year in Yards per Route Run, and Cameron’s situation just got a lot better. According to the RotoViz Fantasy Efficiency App, Charles Clay was given the 12th-most opportunity last year among tight ends, yet was the 4th-worst tight end in the league from an efficiency standpoint. As a much more efficient TE than Clay, Cameron should be able to rehab his value quickly in Miami.
Rookie Fever
We’re getting to the time of year when Rookie Picks start going for outrageous value. And “Rookie Fever” will only increase post NFL draft when dynasty owners fall in love with their target player’s talent AND situation. Here’s our Rookie Fever Trade of the Week:
Traded away 1.01 and 2016 2nd and received 1.03 and 2016 1st. #UTHtrades #dynastytrades
— A. Don Davenport (@ADonDavenport) March 28, 2015
Pre-draft there’s still some uncertainty even around early firsts. But everyone always loves the 1.01. So @ADonDavenport moves down two spots and turns a future 2nd into a 1st. Love it.
Building Dynasties Takes Thick Skin
Not every trade seems like a clear-cut win. This trade was an example of one of those deals where you’re going to hear it from some of your league-mates:
Total Rebuild Gave AJG Got Cooks/ 1.13/ 3.06 & 2016 2nd #UTHtrades
— Big Perm (@BigPerm3313) March 31, 2015
I would guess that most owners would value the A.J. Green side higher here, but in a total rebuild I like this move. Cooks has WR1 upside and is 5 years younger than Green. For now there’s a production gap but in 2-3 years time that’s probably no longer the case. In the meantime @BigPerm3313 has added rebuilding pieces in the 1.13 & 3.06 in a deep class plus a future 2nd.
One point that was brought up on twitter is that Green may have fetched more in-season. That’s probably true since Green had a bit of a down season in 2014. Then again the player selected at the 1.13 will probably be harder to come by as well, so it’s probably a wash.
Even in a rebuild this type of move is going to raise some eyebrows, but if you want to build a dynasty you have to be willing to look a year or two down the line and make the right moves for your team.
