Trading Post

This dynasty trade was made shortly after the 2017 season ended in a 12-team PPR devy league that starts 1-1-1-1-4Flex-1SFlex. The league just finished year 1 and you can read about my journey in my Dynasty Season Review.

The Approach

My offseason plan for this team was to consolidate talent.  While I was extremely high on Jordan Matthews this offseason, I feel his window to develop into more than a fantasy WR3 is closing. It is likely that Philadelphia will address the position in free agency or the draft. Because only 2 devy players per team can be placed on the taxi squad, my roster spots are tight. With four of my six devy players returning for school in 2017 (Courtland Sutton, Derrius Guice, Mike Weber and Royce Freeman) I do not have space to draft all 4 devy picks that I own since they will all be stashed on my active roster. When a team posted in our league chat he was looking to take his team in a new direction and everyone was available, I pounced.

The Trade

Executed January 3rd, 2017

Gave Courtland Sutton, Jordan Matthews, Jack Doyle, Rookie 1.04, Rookie 1.12, Rookie 3.05, Devy 2.04, Devy 2.12

Received Odell Beckham Jr., Rob Gronkowski, Ty Montgomery, Rookie 2.08

This trade took multiple counters before a deal was agreed upon. The negotiations were being made the week before Courtland Sutton announced he would remain in school for another year. Sutton and the 1.04 were the pieces that most negotiations centered around as I wanted to keep one or both of those players in a deal. With the devy and superflex components of the league, the 1.04 will likely land a player in the 8-10 overall range of normal rookie drafts.

As high as I am on Sutton, I feel I got the best two players in this deal. This deal also freed up 4 roster spots which will be vital moving into 2017. With an offseason ‘need’ at running back, the addition of Ty Montgomery as a throw in can potentially have a major impact in season.

Takeaways

The first few weeks after the dynasty season ends hold opportunities to get in front of ADP in trades, or to get in front of other owners to make blockbuster trades happen. Jordan McNamara’s article on early offseason strategy is an example. One thing I see on a regular basis is owners saying, ‘I would have given more if I knew’ or ‘How did you get that deal done?’ or ‘I didn’t know that player was available!’ Keeping tabs on your fellow owners in the early offseason can be vital.  Finding out an owner is considering blowing up his team before other owners do allows you to land the stud at the discount only you know about.
