Trading Post

This dynasty trade was made shortly after the Monday Night game in Week 2. This is a 10-team non-ppr league with 25 roster spots. Starting lineups are 1-2-3-1-1Flex-1K-1DST. This is Year 2 of an orphan rebuild.  I snuck into the playoffs last year thanks to Devonta Freeman and Blake Bortles but finished fourth.

The Approach

This trade came to me.  Going into Monday Night Football, I was excited to watch Kevin White.  With 4 catches for 36 yards, I was not overly impressed.  Twitter and commentators were very harsh on White’s performance, calling him slow and bringing up that White could be a bust.

The offer hit my inbox during the game. Kevin White and DeAndre Smelter for my 2017 1st.  After a few counters, we agreed to the deal below.

The Trade

Gave 2017 1st

Received Kevin White, 2017 3rd

Because of the shallow starting requirements in the league and my mid-level depth, Smelter would not have a spot on my roster.  Attempts to include a player along with my 1st to return White and a 2nd were unsuccessful. The 3rd round pick frees up another roster spot and gives me capital to move up in the draft next year.

Christopher Harris describes the fantasy community as an echo chamber, magnifying vague statements to the point they are accepted as fact.  Kevin White is a prime example of this. Davante Adams is another.  Since White is no longer a ‘sexy’ name to hold on your roster, many owners are willing to sell low.  As written this week, Kevin White is a player you need to hold with patience.

The 2017 1st I am giving is as close to a random 1st as you can get.  My team has had a disappointing 0-2 start this year, but I felt coming into the year it could contend.  If I continue to struggle, this trade could look bad going into 2017 draft season.

My Post-Trade Roster

Blake Bortles, Jameis Winston

Ryan Mathews, Devonta Freeman, Matt Jones, Jonathan Stewart, Christine Michael, Dwayne Washington, Kenneth Dixon, Jordan Howard

Randall Cobb, Donte Moncrief, Michael Crabtree, Will Fuller, Kevin White, Josh Doctson, Allen Hurns, Sammie Coates, Breshad Perriman, Martavius Bryant

Dennis Pitta, Tyler Eifert

2017 1,2,2,3,3,4,5

Takeaways

In the offseason, I bought Kevin White in several leagues. Tim Torch wrote a Dynasty Challenge on buying Kevin White this offseason. While I would have preferred White to come out hot this year, patience is key.  Nothing has changed since White was a second round startup pick, except the price is dropping.  White is a perfect target for a rebuilding team as he will not put up strong numbers in 2017 and is a great target for a contending team because you will not get a player with his size, speed and draft capital with your late 2017 1st round pick.
