This dynasty trade was made during early-September in a 20-team league with 20 man rosters. Starters include 1-2-2-1-1Flex-1K-1D/ST. After punting year one, this team is ready to compete in 2016.
The Approach
Being a 20-team league with a required quarterback starter, quarterbacks hold extreme value as there are not enough starting options to go around. Quarterback values are higher than a 12 team 2-QB league as 20 start, but 20 teams also want a backup. Many teams will put up a zero for their quarterback’s bye week.
This offer came to me. The Tony Romo owner found himself without a quarterback to begin the season and offered a large package of future draft picks for Carson Wentz. While the offer was strong, I countered and we agreed on a deal.
The Trade
Gave Carson Wentz
Received Tony Romo, 2017 1st, 2nd, 2018 1st, 3rd, 2019 2nd, 3rd
Adding Tony Romo to the deal gives me the potential to have a top-10 starting option for the second half of the season. I do not expect Romo to lose his job even if Dak Prescott has a strong showing early in the season. With Romo being carried on the active roster to begin the season, this could happen sooner than initially expected.
My Post Trade Roster
Tony Romo, Shawn Hill, Jimmy Garoppolo
Le’Veon Bell, Matt Jones, Bilal Powell, Cameron Artis Payne, Christine Michael, Devontae Booker
Brandin Cooks, Allen Robinson, DeVante Parker, Josh Doctson, Davante Adams, Jeff Janis, Sammie Coates, Breshad Perriman
Austin Seferian-Jenkins
2017 1,1,1,2,3,4
2018 1,1,2,3,3,4
2019 1,2,2,3,3,4
Takeaways
On the surface, this trade appears to be giving up on the 2016 season because my quarterbacks are very weak. Adding the injured Tony Romo made this a much more palatable deal for me. If you are in a tough spot in a quarterback-premium league, Romo is an interesting target for during a 2016 run. If everything breaks well for me, Jimmy Garoppolo will start the first four weeks and Romo will be back to help me make a run at the playoffs. With my cupboard stocked with rookie picks over the next few years, I will likely need to take shots at rookie quarterbacks to find a long-term solution.
