This version of the Dynasty Challenge focuses on perceived rookie pick values. Though we are still very early in the 2017 NFL draft process, the consensus rookie board has four names clearly at the top. Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook, Corey Davis and Mike Williams will likely be the top picks in typical dynasty leagues come rookie draft season. These top-4 picks will cost a fortune to acquire. I have seen the 1.03 traded straight up for Brandin Cooks. Rookie fever is in full swing but the savvy owner can still find value.
The Challenge
Target the 1.05 rookie pick in your leagues. This pick is considered to be after a tier break and comes at a much more reasonable price.
The Goal
The draft process is a marathon, not a sprint. Last year at this time Laquon Treadwell was still the 1.01 on most rookie boards and there was a clear tier break after 1.02. Many analysts were advocating trading the 1.03 pick for whatever you could get. I even saw the 2016 1.03 straight up for a random 2017 1st. Fast forward to NFL Draft day and everything had changed. We were now looking at the main tier break at 1.05 due to the emergence of Josh Doctson and Corey Coleman. The 1.03 turned into a premium pick.
The results of Doctson and Coleman’s seasons, though disappointing, is irrelevant to this discussion. The point is we do not know how the draft process will unfold. It is highly likely that another player or two will emerge as must-have assets. This will increase the value of the 1.05 before the pick comes on the clock.
Worst case is that no one emerges and the tier break remains where it is today. Since there is so much talent in the 1st round of the draft, someone will pay up on draft day to ensure they get their guy.
