This dynasty trade was made in the third round of a 14-team superflex dynasty startup draft in the 2016 offseason (July). This league is a 1-2-2-1 with 3 flex spots including one of them being superflex.
Dynasty Trade: The Approach
At the point in the draft in the middle of the second round, we were in the middle of a major quarterback run and I was on the back end, missing out. I traded out of the 1.01 pick to the middle of the first and missed on Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, and Jameis Winston to my surprise. With the 1.07 I took Mike Evans after trying with no luck to trade back another few spots. I tried to move the 2.14 plus a later pick to get back into the mid-second after guys like Marcus Mariota, Blake Bortles, and Brock Osweiler were already gone. Yes, Osweiler was gone in the mid-second and I still did not have my first quarterback in a 14-team superflex. I had no luck to get back into the middle of the second and then my last quarterback target of value in the second got selected, Derek Carr. On the clock with 2.14, I tried to make some moves. I do not ever advise to react to a run by selecting someone you do not have as a value based on where you are in the draft. I always advise to trade to get the guy that was selected a few spots ahead of you that you actually value, just don’t give up the farm.
After a few back and forth emails with the Carr owner, I realized he was not dead set on Carr and actually wanted a receiver. Of the receivers left, I valued Kevin White well above everyone else. The other owner mentioning this did turn the tables a bit as I had the 2.14-3.01 turn and sought a quarterback and receiver. I then shifted my trades to offer 3.01 instead of 2.14. We finally settled on a trade.
The Trade
Gave 3.01, 8.14
Received Derek Carr
Takeaway
My target at 8.14 ended up being Tavon Austin. Looking back on the trade I am completely comfortable getting Derek Carr, who I consider a top-7 quarterback for the next decade, over Matthew Stafford or Ben Roethlisberger and Austin, had I kept the picks.

Do not react to a run with a pick you will regret just because you thought you were missing out on a position. Always explore those trade options and feel out owners during one of those runs.
