Rarely does a player get picked up in one of my dynasty leagues of whom I do not have intimate knowledge. This week, not only did that trend get broken with Shakim Phillips, I had never heard of the wide receiver. I love it when that happens.
Instantly I geek out mining data for the new row in the projection model. Here is some need-to-know information on Shakim Phillips:
Phillips made this catch in the preseason. The funny thing is the announcers were too busy talking with a guest in the booth to give credit to the highlight catch by Phillips down on the field. It was likely the best moment in his NFL lifetime.
Phillips is a 2015 wide receiver prospect with quality athleticism, but woeful production from Boston College and Connecticut during his college years.
At +45% in athleticism, Phillips is on par with Tyrell Williams, the Chargers rookie who is rostered in some dynasty leagues. Tre McBride and Kenny Bell are two other late-round or undrafted rookies with similar athleticism scores.
On the flip side, Phillips’ -57% production score is down in the Bud Sasser, Kaelin Clay, Geremy Davis zone of mediocrity.
Here are a few comparable prospects:
- Josh Lenz
- Brian Tyms
- Taylor Price
- Cedric James
Price was overdrafted by the Patriots, but Tyms had some buzz for a moment in time as an undrafted prospect from 2012. The lack of college production is what kills this list. I would need 40+ offensive roster spots to consider Phillips for a spot.
