Sammie Coates is one of the more athletic wide receivers in the 2015 NFL Draft class. That is not news. However, his one-hit wonder production profile gives pause to his overt physical traits. Here are his prospect peers by the numbers:

The first observation is that Javon Walker is the only real fantasy success over any significant stretch on this list.

Coates’ production is troublesome as he had one above-baseline season by age at Auburn and his raw stats of 46 YPG and 0.34 TD/G is a poor result even on this comp list of underachievers. His career yards-per-catch speaks to his big play ability, but a TD Ratio below 1.00 is not typically a sign of a future NFL TD scorer.

Martavis Bryant is an interesting name on the list and Coates, by the numbers, is rich man’s version. David Terrell is similar across the board, but was much more established when looking at the secondary production numbers in their profiles.

Coates’ rookie draft range of 10-20 overall fits with his athletic, but tepid metric profile. I am leaning towards Coates being an avoid player instead of a target player within his final NFL Draft tier due to this comparable set and the concerns Doug and I discussed on his Player Spotlight premium podcast.
